Over the years, I’ve come to call this time of year in school “the honeymoon period.” For better or worse (pun intended), children and teachers tend to be on their best behavior as they navigate the waters of their new learning community together.

As parents and as teachers, we’re especially aware as a new school year starts of the importance of the teacher-student relationship. It’s at the forefront of our children’s minds, too: ”Who will be my new teacher?” they ask. “Will my teacher be strict? Will she like me?”

Truth of the matter is, we Americans have too much stuff. Look around at home and school—it’s hard to keep it all organized!
