Pedagogy is generally defined as “the function or work of a teacher” or “the art or science of teaching.” (Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary) How do we define just what that work is or how it is to be carried out in American public education?

Ninety-nine years ago, in 1912, two young teachers wrote a book for the ages. I was reminded about their work at the recent 60th Anniversary event of the Gesell Institute of Human Development, held in New Haven, Connecticut, in October.

We’re fast approaching the time in our country when we will have national academic standards in all core content areas in the curriculum, with student achievement measured by a single national test. This is not necessarily a bad thing.

National “Common Core,” grade by grade, K–12 educational standards are being rapidly finalized across the political landscape as they pass through the doors of governor’s offices and state houses even before the miniscule window of opportunity for public comment closes.
